This month get to know director, Simon Collin, a little better with our ‘spotlight on’ series.
➡️ Why did you choose Quantity Surveying?
A family friend was a QS and he sold me the dream at an early age.
➡️ Best thing about being a QS?
Meeting new people on a regular basis, forming a team ethos to achieve a collective goal. Every day is a school day, learning something new.
➡️ Hardest thing about being a QS?
Managing expectations of each stakeholder in the construction process.
➡️ Favourite project worked on?
Derby Quad.
➡️ Proudest career moment?
Achieving Chartered status after a long period of study.
➡️ Favourite building?
Houses of Parliament, London.
➡️ What advice would you give someone currently looking at career choices?
If you are looking for variety in your career and enjoy meeting like-minded professionals then the construction industry may be for you.
➡️ What would you change about the construction industry?
Improve the timescales on the planning process. With delays taking place, the increase in construction costs is reducing profits and viability to developers.
➡️ If you were not a QS, what would you be?
Probably in IT or a ‘Saggar Makers Bottom Knocker’ – my careers officer at school always suggested this as a fall back if things didn’t go to plan!
