Chris HuntNews

We hear from QS Gemma Storer on how she got into this career, her favourite projects to date, and what she’d like to change in the industry.

➡️ Why did you choose Quantity Surveying?

A family friend introduced me to the role and let me undertake work experience. The role looked interesting, so I signed up for a part-time degree course in Quantity Surveying.

➡️ Best thing about being a QS?

The varied projects and tasks, every day is different.

➡️ Hardest thing about being a QS?

It can be a challenging role working on numerous projects, maintaining contractual deadlines, and providing excellent customer service to all your clients, but it is a rewarding one!

➡️ Favourite project worked on?

Dubai Mall.

➡️ Proudest career moment?

There have been many projects I have enjoyed and been proud of, but I generally like projects that involve/help the local community. One refurbishment project I worked on provided assisted living for post 16-year-old children leaving the care system, it’s great when existing buildings are redeveloped to help the local community.

➡️ Favourite building?

Millau Viaduct (not a building, but its’ my favourite structure, in a beautiful place in the world).

➡️ What advice would you give someone currently looking at career choices?

Understand what you enjoy and want to achieve, then research sectors/roles that allow you reach your goals!

➡️ What would you change about the construction industry?

Greater diversity.

➡️ If you were not a QS, what would you be?

Aircraft Technician in the RAF.
